Stock:

Weight: With foldability being such an important component of converting, here are some general guidelines to help you with planning your next envelope job.

Minimum weights: Ideal weights are 70# coated book or greater, and 60# uncoated book or greater. Anything of a lesser weight does not allow for enough “body” to fold as effectively.

Maximum weights: Anything over .008 caliper has a chance of increased cracking and spoilage. Talk to us ahead of time to ensure that it will look great!

Type: We specialize in handling a variety of different stocks-translucent and specialty papers. Let us help you with that next unique job.

Grain Direction:
Grain Right vs. Grain Wrong: Grain right is ideal for better folding, decreasing cracking and waste. We want you to be efficient with your stock and on press. If you are in a situation where running the envelope grain wrong is the best scenario, let us know and we’ll help you set the job up just right.

Design:
Bleeds: We can not guarantee perfect bleeds!
Slight variation occurs naturally in the die cutting and folding process. For best results, extend all bleeds 1/8” beyond any cutting or folding lines. The quality of the printed stock directly affects the process; with press bounce and missing side guidelines having a negative impact. Variance can be minimized by using our Profile Die system on larger orders (25,000 +) or sending in stock that has been letterpress diecut and scored.

Critical Bleeds: Normal tolerance by industry standard is 1/16” in all directions. To keep that variance to an absolute minimum we recommend having envelopes letterpress die-cut and scored prior to the converting process.

Knockouts: Please keep knockout areas free of inks and varnishes, as they may cause glue to fail. If design requires printing on the inside of the envelopes, please call us for a special layout with those knockouts.

Varnish: Varnishing the sheet can be helpful in protecting heavy ink coverage from marking during converting.

Layout:
#-Out: Utilize our expertise in nesting envelopes by having us help you engineer your job to get the most out of your press sheets.

Multiple Up Layouts: 1 up sheet sizes have a ¼” border build on all dimensions for die cutting. Multiple up layouts should be positioned at the edge of the sheet to reduce the need for trimming.

Our Templates: Envelope manufacturers dies differ. If you have previously run a job with a different converter discuss this with us. We’ll get you set up with one of our layouts. Quite a few of our dies are also readily accessible through our web site www.seattleenvelope.com.

Overs:
The general rule of thumb is 300 overs or 10%, whichever is greater.
